Coat&Cupboard: Providing free coats

Donación protegida
What happens when a resourceful church youth group takes on an innovative community project? The result is Coat & Cupboard, a place where folks can select a clean, gently used coat, or hat, or mittens, or even a blanket. Coat & Cupboard solves the crucial problem of providing warm clothing to our community---but we need approximately $2,500 in order to enable our program to operate this winter.

The village of Farmington is nestled in the foothills of western Maine. Here, the average low temperature in January is just 3 degrees F--although we usually experience a week or more of temperatures that dip as low as minus 25 degrees F. Moreover, the average yearly snowfall exceeds 7-1/2 feet.

Members of our community often struggle with issues of poverty, and sometimes purchasing a warm coat is simply beyond their financial ability.

That’s why the youth group of Old South First Congregational church in Farmington has launched Coat & Cupboard. We open our doors the first Sunday of each month so members of the community can stop by to pick up a new coat or sweater, or perhaps a blanket or pair of boots.

Coat & Cupboard is located in the carriage house of the church’s office building. Unfortunately, Coat & Cupboard does not have a source of heat at this time--and that makes it difficult for us to open on bitterly cold winter days, when coats and hats are most needed!

We are actively researching environmentally-friendly heating equipment options, as well as innovative insulating products for our windows and ceiling. It is estimated that it will cost approximately $4,000 to insulate and heat Coat & Cupboard. The youth group has diligently pursued fundraising options, raising more than $1,500 so far, but we realize that we cannot raise enough money on our own.

We are excited to serve the community with warm outerwear, and we envision many ways that Coat & Cupboard can expand and grow, too. Next spring, we plan to begin offering free food by coordinating with a local food pantry. We also hope to begin serving hot soups and chilis to folks who stop by. As we envision it, our coat project is just the beginning!

Thank you for considering making a donationt to Coat & Cupboard. Your contributions will help keep Maine families safe and warm during the bitterly cold winter.
